Question

If the mean of 5 observations x,x+2,x+4,x+6,x+8=13, Find x

Open in App
Solution

The mean is calculated by summing the item values and dividing by the number of items.

Hence, summing x, x + 2, x + 4, x + 6 and x + 8, we get 5x + 20.

Dividing this by 5 (5 items) gives us 13, so 5 x 13 must equal 5x + 20.

As an equation this is,

5x + 20 = 65.

Transposition of formulae yields,

5x = 65 - 20 = 45

Divide both sides by 5 and your answer is x = 9.
