Solution

We know that :Mean of observations = sum of observationsnumber of observationsThe given 5 observations are :x, x+2, x+4, x+6 and x+8Mean of 5 observations = x+x+2+x+4+x+6+x+8511 = 5x+2055x+20 = 555x = 55 - 205x = 35x = 355 = 7Now the first 3 observations are :7, 7+2 and 7+4 i.e. 7, 9, 11.Mean of first 3 observations = 7 + 9 + 113 = 273 = 9
