Question

If the number of electrons is 10 for a sodium ion, write the symbol, the number of electrons gained/lost and the number of protons of thus newly formed ion.

Solution

  • An atomic number is the number of protons of an atom.
  • An electrically neutral atom will have an equal number of electrons and protons.
  • The electronic configuration is the arrangement of electrons in different energy levels around the nucleus of an atom.
  • The atomic number and number of electrons of a neutral sodium atom is 11.
  • Electronic configuration of Na:2,8,1.
  • If the number of electrons is 10 means the sodium atom has lost one electron.
  • It will thus form a Na+1 ion.
  • The new electronic configuration:2,8.
  • The number of protons does not depend upon gaining or losing electrons, thus it will be 11.
