If the numerator of a fraction is increased by 2 and its denominator is decreased by 1, it becomes 23. If the numerator is increased by 1 and the denominator is increased by 2, it becomes 13. Find the fraction.

Let the fraction be xy

x+2y1=23 and x+1y+2=13

3x2y=8(i)
and 3xy=1(ii) [1 Mark]

Subtract equation (ii) from equation (i), to eliminate x,

3x2y=8(3xy=1)y=7y=7
[1 Mark]

Substitute y=7 in equation (i), to get the value of x,

3x(14)=83x=8+143x=6x=2

Now, we have x=2 and y=7.

Therefore, the given fraction is 27. [1 Mark]
