Question

If the numerator of a fraction is increased by 2 and the denominator is decreased by 4 then it becomes 2. If the numerator is decreased by 1 and the denominator is increased by 2, then it becomes 13. Find the sum of the numerator and denominator of the fraction.

The correct option is B 11
Let the fraction be xy
As per the given statements, x+2y4=2
x+2=2y8
x2y=10 --- (1)
Also, x1y+2=13
3x3=y+2
3xy=5 --- (2)

Multiplying eqn (2) by 2 and subtracting eqn (1) from it, we get
2(3xy)(x2y)=2(5)(10)
5x=20
x=4

Substituting this value of x in eqn (2), we get
3(4)y=5
y=125=7
x=4;y=7
So, x+y=4+7=11
