Question

If the relative density of a solid is greater than 1, does the solid sink in water.

Solution

  1. Relative density is defined as the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of water at 4°C.
  2. Mathematically it is given as, Relativedensity=DensityofsubstanceDensityofwaterat4°C.
  3. If the density of the substance is greater than water, the value of relative density will be greater than 1, so the body will sink.
  4. If the density of a substance is smaller than water, the value of relative density will be smaller than 1, so the body will float in water.

Hence, we can say that if the relative density of a solid is greater than 1, it will sink in water.
