Question

If the yield of chloroform obtained from acetone and bleaching powder and bleaching powder is 58%. The weight of acetone required for producing 47.847.8 g of chloroform is:
2CH3COCH3+6CaOCl2Ca(CH3COO)2+2CHC3+3CaCl2+2Ca(OH)2$

Solution

2 moles of Acetone gives 2 moles of CHCl3.
or 1 mole of CH3COCH3 gives 1 mole of CHCl3.
Given mole of CHCl3=47.847119.5=0.4
moles of CH3COCH3=0.4
Weight of CH3COCH3=0.4×58=23.2g
But the yield is 58%, Hence weight of CH3COCH3 required=23.258×100=40g
