Question

If we add1 to the numerator and subtract 1from the denominator a fraction reduces to1. It becomes 12, if we only add 1to the denominator. What is the fraction?

Solve for the required fraction:

Let xy be the fraction.

Add 1 to the numerator and subtract 1 from the denominator.

x+1y-1=1x+1=y-1x=y-2......1

Add 1to the denominator

xy+1=122x=y+1......2

Substituting the equation 1 in 2, we get

2y-2=y+1

2y-4=y+12y-y=1+4

y=5

Substituting this in the equation 1 we get

x=5-2x=3

Hence, the required fraction is 35.
