Question

if we have 2 capacitors connected in series, 1st one has charge q, and the other one is uncharged and a 5v battery connected across it with negligeble internal resistance, then what is the current flowing through each capacitor? also find the charge on each capacitor when the current is flowing through the circuit ?

Solution

Let us consider the capacitance of each capacitor is C. When they are connected in series thier equivalent capacitance= C/2.When they are connected in series ,charge q is equally shared and when this combination is connected to a battery of 5V, the charge that is taken by this combination isQ =5C2. Now net charge that will be flowing through the capacitors is (Q-q)= 5c2-q. Through capacitor charges flow not current.charge on each capacitor when current is flowing = 5C/4.
