If $x = 1; y = 2$ , find the value of the following expression.
$x^{2} + y^{2}$

Solution

We simply substitute $x = 1, y = 2$ in the given expression $x^{2} + y^{2}$ as shown below:

$x^{2} + y^{2} = (1)^{2} + (2)^{2} = 1 + 4 = 5$

Hence, the value of the expression $x^{2} + y^{2} = 5$ when $x = 1, y = 2$ .
