$(x + y)^{2} = 64$
$x^{2} + y^{2} + 2 x y = 64$
Given $x y = 12$
$x^{2} + y^{2} + 2 (12) = 64$
$x^{2} + y^{2} = 64 - 24$
$x^{2} + y^{2} = 40$
