Let the required number be $x$

When $\frac{1}{2}$ subtracted from $x$, we get $x-\frac{1}{2}$
When we multiply the above result by $\frac{1}{2}$, we get $\frac{1}{8}$

$\therefore$ $(x-\frac{1}{2})\times \frac{1}{2}=\frac{1}{8}$

$\Rightarrow x-\frac{1}{2}=\frac{2}{8}$

$\Rightarrow x-\frac{1}{2}=\frac{1}{4}$

$\Rightarrow x=\frac{1}{4}+\frac{1}{2}$

$\Rightarrow x=\frac{1}{4}+\frac{2}{4}$

$\Rightarrow x=\frac{1+2}{4}=\frac{3}{4}$
