Imagine that you have created a solution of sugar and water in science class. Your teacher has asked you to retrieve the sugar in its dry state. Which plan of action below should you choose?
Boil the solution
Let the water evaporate
Mixtures are mixed together without any chemical change or reaction occurring between them. And they can be separated into their respective components by physical methods. Both boiling and evaporation are physical means of separation which can be employed in this case.
During boiling, the state of water changes from liquid to gas (water vapour). Water vapour escapes into the air and sugar is left behind. Also, in evaporation, water escapes in the form of water vapour. But it takes a longer time for all of the water to escape, as the evaporation take place at the room temperature.
