Question

In 80% ethanol at 55oC isopropyl bromide reacts with hydeoxide ion according to the following kinetics:
−d[RX]dt=(4.7×10−5M−1s−1)[RX][OH−]+2.4×10−6s−1[RX]
What percentage of isopropyl bromide reacts by the SN2 mechanism when [OH−]=0.01M?

Solution

The correct option is A 16.36%
SN2 mechanism is Biomolecular.
The only biomolecular part is
ϑSN2=(4.7105)[RX][OH] eq 1[A(2)A(1)=k2k1N2N1]
SN1 is unimolecular:
ϑSN1=(2.4106)[RX] eq 2
so eq 1 wrt [RX] is ϑSN2=(4.7107)[RX]
[RX]SN2[RX]SN1=4.71072.4106=16.8%
