there are 4 more girls than boys
so, y= x+4

now When only 8 boys were absent the number of girls was twice the number of boys.
2(x-8)=y
2x -16= x+4
2x-x= 16+4 =20
x=20
number of boys = x =20
number of girls = y = x+4 = 20+4 =24
