Question

In a coolidge tube, the potential difference used to accelerate the electrons is increased from 12.4 kV to 24.8 kV. As a result, the difference between the wavelength of Kα -line and minimum wavelength increases two-fold. The wavelength (in Å) of the Kα line is (hce=12.4 kVA)

Solution

Cut-off wavelength of continuous xRay spectrum is :-
λmin=hceΔV
Hence, hce=12.4 KVÅ
λmin=12.4 KVÅΔV
Where ΔV= potential - difference.
For ΔV=12.4 KV:-
λmin1=12.4 KVÅ12.4 KV=1Å
Similarly, for ΔV=24.8 KV:-
λmin2=12.4 KVÅ24.8 KV=0.5Å
Let, λ be the wavelength of Kα line which is independent of accelerating potential.
Given:-
[λλmin2]=2[λλmin1]
[λ0.5]=2[λ1]
λ0.5=2λ2
λ=1.5Å
