Question

In a double slit experiment with monochromatic light, fringes are obtained on a screen placed at some distances from the slits. If the screen is moved through a distance of 5×102 m towards the slits, the change in fringe width is 3×105 m. If the distance between the slits is 103 m, calculate the wavelength of light used.

Solution

The correct option is A 6000 ˚A
Given:
d=103 m
ΔD=5×102 m
Δβ=3×105 m

Now, β1=λD1d

And, β2=λD2d

As the screen is moved towards the slits, D2<D1 β2<β1

β1β2=λd(D1D2)
Δβ=λd(ΔD)

3×105=λ103×5×102

λ=6×107 m=6000 ˚A

Hence, (A) is the correct answer.
