4 periods added to 8 periods is 12 periods.
Let the duration of each of 12 periods be x hours.

Number of periods Duration (in hours)

Number of periods and duration are in indirect variation.
So, using arrow method:
$\frac{8}{12} = \frac{x}{1}$
On cross multiplication,
$x = \frac{8}{12} = \frac{2}{3}$
So, duration of each of 12 periods is 2/3 hours = 2/3 x 60 = 40 min.
