One of the reasons for the increase in the population of these animals could be stricter monitoring of poaching activities in the forest. Another reason is the decrease in the population of tigers. The tiger preys on deers and wild boars and helps maintain ecological balance by keeping their numbers at an average. However, tigers have been hunted for their skin, endagering them and also increasing the number of animals such as deer, boars, stags and porcupines. Hence, the number of tigers in the wild is an indicator of the well being of an ecosyste.The government of Karnataka has set up five tiger reserves to ensure their protection. They are Bandipur tiger reserve, Biligiri Ranganna Betta Tiger reserve, Dandeli Anshi tiger reserve, Bhadra tiger reserve and Nagarhole tiger reserve.
