Question

In a thermodynamic process, pressure of a fixed mass of a gas is changed in such a manner that the gas releases 20 J of heat, when 8 J of work is done on the gas. If the initial internal energy of the gas was 30 J, then the final internal energy will be

Solution

The correct option is B +18 J
Heat released by gas (ΔQ)=20 J
Work done on gas, (ΔW)=8 J
[ Here system is gas. Heat released by the system is taken negative & work done on the system is also taken negative]
We know from 1st Law of Thermodynamics
ΔQ=ΔU+ΔW
20J=ΔU8 J
ΔU=12 J
Given,
Initial internal energy of gas (Uinitial)=30 J
ΔU=UfinalUinitial
we write that, Ufinal=Uinitial+ΔU
=30+(12)=+18 J
Thus, option (b) is the correct answer.
