Method I:
Average age of n people in a township = 42 years.
Total age of n people = 42n
During the verification it was found the age of a person had been considered 20 years less than the actual age. Therefore the correct total age of n people in a township be (42n + 20) years.
After this correction the average age gets increased by 1, i.e. 42 + 1 = 43
Now,
42n + 20 = 43n
On calculating we get,
N = 20

Method II:
The extra 20 years must get distributed evenly among all the n persons in the township. As the average age increased by 1 year, hence it implies that everyone got 1 year more added into their age.
For 20 years to increase 1 year in everyone’s age, n = 20
Hence, option (b) is the correct answer.
