Question

In an example, a glass is taken and cardboard is placed upon it and coin is placed upon cardboard. When we flick the cardboard it moves forward and the coin falls in the glass. Then it is said that they follow law of inertia that is, force acts on cardboard so it is set in motion and coin falls in glass so it is at rest as no force acts on coin. But here we can see that coin falls so it is set in motion then how the law of inertia is followed?

Solution

  • As long as the coin is on the card board, it can't fall down because its weight is balanced by the normal reaction of the card board so that the net force acting on it zero. Hence, it obeys law of inertia.
  • Once, the card board is flicked away, the net force acting on the coin is not equal to zero and it acts in the downward direction.
  • After flicking the card board, as the net force is not equal to zero, the law of inertia is not obeyed since the law of inertia is valid only when the net external force acting on the substance is equal to zero.
