Question

In an experiment for determination of velocity of sound by resonance tube methods using a tuning fork of frequency 512 Hz, first resonance was observed at 30.7cm and record was obtained by 63.2cm. The maximum possible error in velocity of sound (actual velocity of sound in air is 332m/s) is:

Solution

The correct option is C 80 cm
Given,
f=512Hz
x1=30.7cm
x2=63.2cm
va=332m/s=33200cm/s
The distance between 1st resonance and 2nd resonance is
λ2=x2x1
λ=2(x2x1)
λ=2(63.230.7)cm
λ=65cm
The velocity of sound, v=λf
v=65×512=33280cm/s
The maximum possible error in the velocity of sound will be
error=vav
error=3328033200=80cm/s
The correct option is A.
