Working of electrostatic precipitator
The electrostatic precipitator works on the principle of electric charging of dust particles and collecting them on a differently charged platform.
The working of the precipitator can be described in the following steps:-
  • Electrostatic precipitators are composed of two electrodes maintained at several thousand volts.
  • These electrodes produce a corona of negative charges.
  • The released electrons get attached to the particulate matter passing through the precipitator.
  • The suspended particles after being exposed to the corona get negatively charged and are attracted to the collecting plate grounded in the earth.
  • These electrodes are removed and cleaned at regular intervals to collect the soot and ash.
Therefore, it is most widely used to remove over 99% of particulate matter present in the exhaust of a thermal power plant.
