In Fig. 12.30, OACB is a quadrant of a circle with centre O and radius 3.5 cm. If OD = 2 cm, find the area of the
(i) quadrant OACB
(ii) shaded region.

Solution
Radius of the quadrant =3.5cm=72cm
Area of quadrant = (πR2)4cm2 =(227×72×72)4cm2 =778cm2
(ii) Radius of the quadrant =3.5cm=72cm
Area of ΔBDO =12×(base)×(height)
Area of triangle BOD =12×72×2cm2 =72cm2
Area of shaded region = Area of quadrant - Area of triangle BOD =(778−72)cm2=498cm2 =6.125cm2
