Question

In oil drop experiment, the following charges were experimentally determined for five oil droplets 1.2×1018unit , 3.0×1018unit, 6.0 times1018unit 2.4×1018unit 3.6 times1018unit(unit is arbitrary). What should be the charge ob electron in this arbitrary unit?

Solution

The magnitude of the charge should be smallest and other charges should be integral multiples of that smallest charge.
So, in the data given here,
the smallest charge is 1.2×1018
and all other charges are integral multiple of it.
Therefore,
The charge on electron =1.2×1018
