Question

In the Bohr model of hydrogen atom, the electron circulates around the nucleus in a path of radius 5.1×1011 m at a frequency 6.8×1015 s1. Find the magnetic field set up at the centre of the orbit.

Solution

The circulating electron is equivalent to a circular current carrying loop,
i=ef
=6.8×1015×1.6×1019
=1.08×1023amp
Magnetic field at the center
B=μ0i2a=4π×107×1.08×1032×5.1×1011
=13.3weber/m2
