Question

In the circuit shown in figure, the power which is dissipated as heat in the 6Ω resistor is 6 W. What is the value of resistance R in the circuit?

Solution

Given power consumed by 6 Ω resistor is 6 W
P=6=i2R6=i2×6i=1 Amp

As resistors of resistances R and 8 Ω are in parallel
Effective resistance of them is 8R8+R

Now resistor 6 Ω is connected in series with combination of resistances R and 8 Ω.
Req=(6+8R8+R)

Using Ohms law
V=i×Req
12=1(6+8R8+R)
8R=6(8+R)
2R=48R=24 Ω
