In the experiment to determine the relative density of a solid denser than water and insoluble in it, the weight of the object is noted twice. First it is noted when the solid object is suspended from a hook in the physical balance. Then a beaker nearly two third filled with water is placed between the balance using a bridge so that it does not touch the pan. The solid is then completely immersed in the water and its weight is noted. A loss in weight is observed and the difference is obtained by subtracting the weight of solid in water from the weight of solid in air. The relative density is obtained by dividing the weight of solid in air by the loss in weight of solid.
