Question

In the extraction of aluminium from alumina, liquid cryolite is used. Give reason.

Open in App
Solution

Aluminium oxide has a very high melting point (over 2000oC) so it would be expensive to melt it. So it is dissolved in molten cryolite -which has a lower melting point than aluminium oxide. The use of cryolite reduces some of the energy costs involved in extracting aluminium.
