then determine whether the segments in each of the following pairs are congruent or not.
(i) seg BC and seg DE
(ii) seg AB and seg CD.

Given: l(AC) = 8 and l(BC) = 5
Thus, l(AB) = 8$-$5 = 3
and seg BD $\cong$ seg CE $\cong$ seg AC

(i) seg BC and seg DE
Here, seg BD = seg BC +seg CD
and seg CE = seg CD + seg DE
Now, seg BC + seg CD $\cong$ seg CD + seg DE
i.e., seg BC $\cong$seg DE

(ii) seg AB and seg CD
Here, seg AC = seg AB +seg BC
⇒ seg AC = seg AB + seg DE [From (i)]
⇒ seg CD + seg DE $\cong$ seg AB +seg DE
i.e., seg CD $\cong$ seg AB
