1.In the reaction, 2Mg+CO22MgO+C, Mg is in its 0oxidation state and C shows +4oxidation state in CO2molecule before the reaction.

2.After the reaction, Mg loses 2e- and forms Mg+2 in MgO and C reaches to 0 oxidation state by gaining electrons.

Since, Mg is undergoing oxidation it is a reducing agent and C is undergoing reduction it is an oxidizing agent.
