Question

In the reaction Fe(OH)3(s) Fe3+aq+3OHaq, if the concentration of OH is decreased by 14 times then the equilibrium concentration ofFe3+ increased by how many times?

Solution

The equilibrium constant for a reaction at the given temperature is constant; it does not depend on the concentration of reactants of products. So, it will not change on changing the concentration of reactant or product.
Now, given reaction is:-
Fe(OH)3(S)Fe+(aq)+3OH(aq)
KC=[Fe+][OH]3(I)
Now, at eqm,
[OH]=14[OH](II)
At eqm,
KC=[Fe3+]([OH]2)3(III)
But, KC=KC
[Fe3+]2([OH]4)3=[Fe3+][OH]3
[Fe3+]=64[Fe3+]
