In the recent years, there has been increasing incidents of floods in the plains of northern India because:
There has been increased deforestation in the catchment area
Increased areas of land are being self-cultivated
Forests decrease the flow of water. Deforestation in the catchment area increases the chances of flood. Due to the increase in population and increased areas of land are being self-cultivated, deforestation has increased several folds in northern India in last few decades. Also, northern India does have more rivers than southern India, but having more rivers is not a valid reason for increased floods.
