Question

In the textbook the E value for copper is positive ,it is due to the sum of enthalpy of sublimation and ionization not balancing hydration enthalpy .My question is how the electrode potential dependent upon enthalpy of sublimation , ionization and hydration ?

Solution

lower the ionisation energy and higher the hydration energy, more is the reducing character of the atom because for lower ionisation energy more easier the electrons can be ejected and given to the other species(which is going to be reduced and calld oxidising agent). Similarly, if the hydration enthalpy is high, more the amount of hydration energy(or lower the value of lattice enrgy) released and so better solubilize and form ions, and so it act as reducing agent. The electrode potential s the resultant of the ionisation enthalpy, lattice enthalpy, hydration enthalpy and ionisation gain enthalpy.
