In the titration of FeSO4 with KMnO4 in the acidic medium,why is dilute H2SO4 used instead hCl?

Dear Student,

H₂SO₄ is added to make the medium acidic. HCl cannot be used instead of H₂SO₄ because KMnO₄ oxidises Cl^- to Cl₂. This prevents the oxidation of Fe²⁺ and so the required reaction will not occur.
