In the water canal system of poriferans, the pathway for water flow is
Ostia→Spongocoel→Osculum
In sponges, water along with food and oxygen is pulled into the body through inhalant pores called ostia into a spongocoel and then to exhalant pores called osculum before being released back to the water. This system is called water canal system, and it aids in nutrition, respiration, excretion and even reproduction in sponges.
