Solution

Dear Student

There are several systems in which the king provided land and protection in exchange for services. A few of them have been described below -
Feudalism - prevalent in medieval Europe, the king would give land, also called fiefdoms to people. In exchange for the production and revenue returns that the estate owner was privileged to collect, he was supposed to maintain a fixed army and be in service to the king. In feudalism, a fief could be further divided into sub-fiefdoms and the system continued down unto the peasant.
The system of land grants in ancient India is often seen as feudal in structure.
Mansabdari System - During the Mughal era, the emperor often gave jagirs (land grants) instead of salaries to zamindars. They were also given zat and sawar ranks which determined how many troops they were supposed to maintain for the king. They could be called upon for any military or civil service.
Jagirdari System - In this system, the empire was divided into various jagirs which were then appointed to jagirdars who were supposed to collect the revenue from these lands and keep the difference as their salary. They were not expected to maintain troops but worked as revenue officials for the state.

In all these systems the king functioned as a protector of the various estate owners, jagirdars and zamindars and ensured that they could function peacefully in their areas. Within these land grants, the owners enjoyed considerable independence in terms of law and administration.
