Question

In what mol ratio Hydrogen and Oxygen gas are produced during the electrolysis of aqueous Sodium chloride in platinum electrode?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Electrolysis of the ionic compound Sodium chloride(NaCl) in the aqueous form produce Hydrogen gas, Oxygen, and Chlorine gas.
  2. The Chlorine gas is produced at the electrode Anode.
  3. And the Hydrogen gas is produced at the electrode Cathode.
  4. The anodic and cathodic reaction for the production of Hydrogen and Oxygen gas from the electrolysis of water is,

Cathode: 2H+2H→2H2(g)Hydrogengas

Anode: 4OH-β†’2H2O+O2(g)Oxygengas

From the reaction, it will be known that the ratio is 2:1 since 2 molecules of Hydrogen and 1 molecule of Oxygen gas are produced.
