Solution

Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion. This includes changes to the object's speed, direction, or state of rest.Inertia is also defined as the tendency of objects to keep moving in a straight line at a constant velocity.

examples of inertia of rest.
  1. When you shake the branch of a tree leaves get detached.
  2. When you beat a carpet dust particles come out.
  3. When you sit in a car and it starts you lean backward.
  4. With a quick pull a table cloth can be removed from a dining table without disturbing dishes on it.
  5. Pulling a heavy object on ground requires a big force, it shows inertia of rest.

Above are the

Examples of inertia of motion are:-

  1. When bus applies sharp brakes you fell pushed forward due to inertia of motion.
  2. A ball thrown upward in a train moving with uniform velocity returns to the thrower because during upward and downward motion, the ball also moves along horizontal with train due to inertia of motion.
  3. A man jumping from moving bus falls forward due to inertia of motion.
  4. An athlete runs some distance, before taking a long jump due to inertia of motion.
  5. A moving bicycle comes to rest after some time if we stop pedalling it.

Example of inertia of direction are:-

  1. When a car makes a sharp turn at a high speed, the driver tends to get thrown to other side due to inertia of direction.
  2. The spark coming out of a grinding stone are tangential to the rotating stone due to directional inertia.
  3. The mud from the wheels of a moving vehicle flies off tangentially.
  4. It is adviced to tie our luggage kept on the roof of a bus with a rope because luggage can be thrown sideways due to inertia of direction.
  5. Water is flowing in a particular direction and if you place a rotating wheel particles of water fly of tangentially due to inertia of direction.
