A bacterial or viral infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord usually causes the swelling. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in infants, young children and adults.
Viral meningitis is the more common and are of less serious form . It usually clears up on its own in seven to 10 days. In comparison, the bacterial meningitis is much more dangerous and can be fatal if not treated quickly with antibiotics.
