Question

Instead of a leafy twig if we take a single flower with a long stalk in a test tube and fill it with water covered by a layer of oil on its surface will there be any loss of water?

Solution

Transpiration in the flower with stalk:

  1. Transpiration is the process by which plants lose water in the form of water vapor from the aerial parts of the plant.
  2. Transpiration depends on the normal opening and closing of stomata which are tiny pores present on the surface of leaves.
  3. Thus, during the process of transpiration, the excess water in the plant is lost through these pores which are clearly visible on a leafy twig of the plant.
  4. Therefore while performing the said experiment a leafy shoot of a plant is taken so as to obtain an accurate result.
  5. Taking the flower with a stalk dipped in water will not suffice for the experiment.

Final Answer: So, there will not be any loss of water.
