Intermolecular forces act between molecules of a substance and arises due to the charge distribution inside a molecule. The molecules exists in a polarized state ( due to distortion of the electron cloud by adjacent molecule).


Hence attractive forces operate between the oppositely charged poles and repulsive forces operate between similarly charged poles.
