Solution

The correct option is B False

First we will know the definitions of lattice and solvation energy to understand the question.

Lattice energy is defined as the energy given off when a crystal solid is formed from infinitely separated ions in the gaseous state.

The energy of solvation is actually the energy released when individual ions are surrounded in solution by the solvent molecules.

In dissolution of ionic compounds, ions of the compound are separated and solvated by the solvent molecules. The energy needed to separate the ions from the lattice of compound is equal to lattice energy and the energy released when ions are surrounded by solvent molecules is called solvation energy.

So let’s think what happens when lattice energy is greater than solvation energy and lattice energy is less than solvation energy.

If lattice energy is more than solvation energy and no external energy is supplied from outside, the solute is insoluble in solvent.

If energy is absorbed from outside in this case dissolution is endothermic & the solute is soluble in the solvent.

Case (ii): If lattice energy is less than solvation energy the energy is released during dissolution process (exothermic) & solute is easily soluble.
