Question

Ionization energy of Cu is less than Zn but ionization energy of Cu^+1 > Zn^+1. Why?

Open in App
Solution

Ionisation energy is the energy required to remove an electron from the valence shell.Zn is having the fully filled orbitals 3d104s2 whereas copper is having 3d104s1 . Alwaysremoving an electron from the fully filled orbital or partially filled orbital is tough as they are more stable. So the ionisation energy of Zinc is more than copper. After losing 1 electron they became Zn+ and Cu+ and they have the configurationZn+ as 3d104s1 and Cu+ has 3d104s0 . Now the removal of electron from copper is tough and it needs more ionisation energy.
