Is Anabaena a free-living nitrogen fixer?

Open in App
Solution

Nitrogen fixation:

Nitrogen fixation is a chemical process in which molecular nitrogen present in the atmosphere is converted into ammonia.

Anabaena:

  1. Anabaena is a plankton-forming cyanobacterium.
  2. It looks like a string of beads and is mostly found in shallow water or wet soil.
  3. It has the nitrogen-fixing ability and establishes symbiotic relationships with plants like the mosquito fern.
  4. It fixes atmospheric nitrogen in the presence of sunlight and oxygen, in order to obtain the necessary nutrients for its development.
  5. So, Anabaena is a free-living nitrogen fixer.
