Question

Is Boron And Hydrogen Polar Or Nonpolar?

Open in App
Solution

Borane and Hydrogen is a nonpolar substance because it has symmetrical trigonal planar geometry.

  • The electronegativity of Boron(2.04) and Hydrogen(2.20) atoms is nearly the same.
  • Due to the same electronegativity, the B-H bond is almost nonpolar.
  • The possibility of the polarity of B-H bonds cancels out by each other resulting in a nonpolar molecule due to its symmetric shape.

Conditions for nonpolar molecules:

  • The central atom of the element or compound does not have any unshared electron.
  • The atoms of the element or compound surrounding the central atom are of the same type.
  • From the above figure, we see that the given molecules follow the conditions for nonpolar molecules.
  • Hence, Borane and Hydrogen are nonpolar molecules.
