Question

Is Mycoplasma smaller than the virus?

Open in App
Solution

Mycoplasma:

  1. Mycoplasma is a genus of bacteria that lacks a cell wall enclosing their cell membranes, like the other members of the Mollicutes class.
  2. Murein (peptidoglycan) is not present.
  3. Antibiotics that target cell wall production are naturally resistant to them because of this trait.
  4. Although the virus is smaller than Mycoplasma, it is not classified as a cell because it lacks a cellular component.
  5. Viruses are live organisms in the presence of a host and non-living entities in the absence of a host.
  6. Mycoplasma is now regarded to be the tiniest living cell in the biological world.
  7. They are smaller than some poxviruses, with a minimum size of about 0.2 micrometers
  8. Some viruses are even smaller than Mycoplasma, e.g. poliovirus.
