Question

Are protozoans similar to animals or plants?

Open in App
Solution

Protozoa:

  1. They are mostly aquatic, some parasitic while others are free living.
  2. They are unicellular, and they have a true membrane-bound nucleus.
  3. They are surrounded by a plasma membrane only they don't have a wall (animal characteristic) and some of them have an outer covering pellicle.
  4. They are heterotrophic in nutrition (animal characteristics).
  5. Locomotion occurs by cilia, flagella, or pseudopodia (animal characteristics).
  6. Examples include Entamoeba histolytica, Toxoplasma gondii, etc.

Therefore protozoa are animal-like and not a plant. They belong to the kingdom of protists.
