Question

Is there any relation between EMF of a battery and drift speed of electrons in the conductor connected to a battery?

Open in App
Solution

The drift velocity of electrons is directly proportional to the potential difference applied across the conductor.

Drift velocity vd = V/(ρlne),

where V is the potential difference, ρ the specific resistance, l the length of the conductor, n the number of electrons per unit volume of the conductor and e the electronic charge.

(Emf is the p.d. when the cell is not supplying any current.)
